Why Every Small Business Needs a Website (Even If Social Media Is Working)

If your entire business lives on only social media, you're building your dream on rented land.

That might sound dramatic, but it's true!

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn are incredible tools for connecting with people.

They help you reach new audiences, tell your story, and build relationships.

But, they should never be the foundation of your business.

Your website should be!

Hi! I'm Ailsa, co-owner and a Wix Legend Partner. For over 10 years, I've helped hundreds of businesses create websites that communicate their value clearly, attract the right customers, and grow with confidence.

Reason #1: You Don't Own Your Social Media

Think about it...if an algorithm changes overnight, your account gets hacked, your reach suddenly drops by 80%, or a platform disappears (remember Vine?) you're in trouble.

None of those things are in your control.

When your business depends entirely on social media, someone else's company ultimately decides who sees your content and when.

Years of hard work can be impacted by changes you never saw coming.

Your website is different because it's your digital home.

With your own website, you control the messaging, the customer experience, your branding, your offers, and your content.

No algorithm decides whether someone can find your services.

Side note on Social Media Algorithms

Social media is designed to keep viewers engaging, and most people will take the time to engage when they are angry and frustrated.

So, this means you're actually more likely to get the wrong audience sent to your social media page because anger and frusration is what gets people commenting, sharing and staying on the app.

Now if that's the kind of audience you want, or you're not against creating rage bait content, I'm not here to judge.

BUT, if you want a more positive community with friendly interactions, take the time to build your own community through your own website.

Reason #2: Your Website Should Answer Three Questions Immediately

When someone lands on your website, they should know the answers to these questions within a few seconds:

  • What do you do?

  • Who do you help?

  • Why should they choose you?

People don't have time to hunt through menus or read paragraphs trying to figure out if they're in the right place.

A clear website removes confusion.

Instead of making visitors think, it guides them.

Imagine visiting a website and immediately reading:

"Helping busy parents launch beautiful Wix websites that generate more leads without spending all day marketing."

You instantly know:

  • what the business does

  • who it's for

  • and the value you'll receive

That's powerful AND people appreciate that you got right to the point.

If it's what they're looking for, perfect!

If they're unsure, they can join your community and follow along until they're convinced.

And if they're not a good fit, no worries. You've saved both sides time and you'll attract the right person!

Reason #3: Social Media Starts the Conversation, But Your Website Finishes It

Social media is amazing for getting attention, but your website is where people make decisions.

A post might spark curiosity, a reel might earn a follow, or a video might go viral.

But when someone is ready to buy, hire you, or contact you, they'll almost always visit your website first.

That's where they'll ask themselves questions like:

  • Can I trust this business?

  • Do they understand my problem?

  • How do I work with them?

  • What does the process look like?

  • Is this worth my investment?

A well-designed website answers every one of those questions.

Reason #4: You Can Build a Community You Own

One of the biggest misconceptions in online business is that your followers are your community.

They're not (yet)! Because they're followers on someone else's platform.

A true community is one you can continue serving no matter what happens to social media.

Your website gives you the ability to:

  • Grow an email list you own.

  • Create resources people can return to again and again.

  • Publish blog posts that show up in Google searches for years.

  • Offer memberships, courses, downloads, or newsletters.

  • Build relationships that don't disappear because of an algorithm update.

Your website becomes the hub, and everything else simply points people back to it.

Reason #5: Your Website Works While You Live Your Life

As entrepreneurs (especially parents) our time matters!

We can't be online every minute answering the same questions over and over. Which is why a good website works for you 24 hours a day.

It can:

  • explain your services,

  • answer frequently asked questions,

  • collect inquiries,

  • book appointments,

  • sell products,

  • capture email subscribers,

  • and nurture leads automatically.

Even while you're making dinner, helping with homework, or enjoying a weekend with your family, your website continues working.

And that's the kind of marketing that creates freedom!

Stop Chasing Algorithms

Instead, start building assets!

Social media is borrowed attention while your website is a business asset.

Every blog you publish, every page you optimize, every testimonial you collect, and every email subscriber you gain adds value to something you own.

Over time, that compounds.

Instead of constantly trying to "beat the algorithm," you're creating a library of helpful content that continues bringing in new customers month after month.

Your Website Is More Than a Brochure

Too many businesses think of a website as something they should have.

The reality is that it should become your best salesperson.

It should clearly communicate who you are, what you do, why you're different, and how someone can take the next step.

It should build trust before you ever have a conversation.

And most importantly, it should give you a place online that no algorithm, social media platform, or changing trend can take away.

Social media is an incredible marketing tool, but don't build your entire business on land you don't own.

Build your home first and then invite people to visit.
