What I'd Focus On If I Had to Grow My Business From Scratch With Kids at Home

If I had to start my business completely over today, with kids at home and limited time, there’s actually a lot I wouldn’t do.

I wouldn’t try to be everywhere. I wouldn’t obsess over making everything perfect. And I definitely wouldn’t waste time trying to keep up with every trend or strategy people swear you “have” to do.

Because when you’re building a business in this particular time of your life, time matters differently.

You don’t have endless uninterrupted workdays. You're building between naps, snacks, school pickups, laundry piles, and trying to remember where you left your coffee you've already reheated 2x today.

They also grow up so quickly! I sometimes look at my 3 year old and think that it wasn't that long ago that we were bringing him home a little 6lb 12oz baby from the hospital.

So, if I had to grow a business from scratch today, here’s exactly what I’d focus on.

1. I’d Build a Website That Actually Works

Not just a pretty one.

I’d focus on creating a website that:

  • Clearly explains what I do

  • Builds trust quickly

  • Gives people an obvious next step

Because your website shouldn’t just sit there looking nice, it should help create opportunities for you 24/7.

Especially as a parent, you need something working in the background while you’re living your life.

I’d make sure my website had:

  • Clear messaging

  • Strong calls-to-action

  • Simple lead capture

  • Mobile optimization

  • Basic automation

Nothing complicated or overwhelming.

Simple and done is what I'd strive for.

2. I’d Focus on One Core Offer

After 13 years working on websites, this is something I see constantly: People try to offer everything because they’re afraid narrowing down will limit them.

But clarity sells.

If I were starting over, I’d focus on:

  • One clear service

  • One specific audience

  • One main problem I solve

That doesn’t mean you stay there forever.

It just means you make it easier for people to understand and hire you.

This will also make your life easier as you figure out how profitable your service is, and continue to optimize it based on customer feedback.

3. I’d Create Content That Builds Trust (Not Just Views)

I wouldn’t chase views.

I’d focus on creating content that:

  • Educates

  • Connects

  • Builds trust

Because followers don’t automatically become clients.

Connection does.

And honestly? Some of the best-performing content is the most real.

The videos:

  • filmed during normal life

  • showing the behind-the-scenes

  • talking about things people actually struggle with

That kind of content builds community and trust.

4. I’d Stop Waiting for Huge Blocks of Time

This mindset shift changes everything as a parent.

In my experience, most parents aren’t going to have full days to dedicate to their business.

So instead of waiting for the “perfect time,” I’d focus on using small pockets of time intentionally.

20 focused minutes can be enough to:

  • Send an email

  • Update your homepage

  • Create a social post

  • Follow up with leads

Small consistent action matters more than occasional massive effort.

5. I’d Prioritize Email Marketing Early

Social media is helpful. But email builds stability.

If I were starting from scratch, I’d start collecting emails immediately, even if my audience was tiny.

Because platforms cand algorithms change.

But you own your email list.

And when done well, email creates ongoing opportunities without requiring you to constantly show up online.

6. I’d Simplify My Marketing

Most overwhelmed business owners don’t need more strategies.

They need fewer things done consistently.

If I were rebuilding from scratch, I’d probably focus on:

  • One website

  • One email strategy

  • One or two social platforms

  • One simple funnel

That’s it.

Simple scales better than chaos.

7. I’d Build Systems Earlier

This is one of the biggest things I’d do differently.

I wouldn’t wait until I was overwhelmed to create systems.

Even simple automations matter:

  • Inquiry responses

  • Welcome emails

  • Scheduling systems

  • Lead capture forms

Systems create breathing room.

And when you’re building a business while raising kids, breathing room matters.

So automate what you can, and don't be afraid to give something a try if it has the potential to make your life easier.

8. I’d Let Go of the Pressure to “Look Successful”

This one’s important.

I think a lot of people delay taking action because they feel like they need:

  • the perfect branding

  • the perfect office

  • the perfect setup

  • the perfect content

You don’t.

People connect with honesty, clarity, and consistency far more than perfection.

Some of my favorite business owners online feel human and authentic.

Also, success means something different for each person. Not everyone wants a fancy car or expensive house.

My definition of success is getting to spend time with my family and the freedom to pursue my hobbies.

You define your own success and what your journey to it looks like.

What I’d Remember Most

I’d remind myself that growing slowly doesn’t mean failing.

Building a business while raising kids requires a different pace sometimes.

And you know what? That’s okay!

Because the goal isn’t just to build a successful business.

It’s to build one that actually fits your life.

Final Thoughts

If I had to grow a business from scratch with kids at home, I wouldn’t focus on doing more. And I definitely wouldn't be pushing myself to the point of burnout.

Instead, I’d focus on:

  • clarity

  • consistency

  • systems

  • trust

  • and simplifying wherever possible

Because sustainable growth almost always beats burnout.

And small intentional steps taken consistently can completely change your business over time!
