Creating a website is often a task that many business owners feel overwhelmed about. If you're not familiar with web builders, domains, and planning out content, it can feel like a lot to take on, but it doesn't have to be!
Mindset Matters - Progress > Perfection
Building a website can take as long as you (and whoever you choose to work with) decide to let it take. Some builds take several months, while others can be done in a few weeks, or in our case, as quick as 1 day.
It's all about the mindset you have. We believe that making progress is better than chasing perfection. The idea of waiting to launch your website until it's "perfect" will prevent you from making progress, money and gathering valuable data, which can help you make data-driven decisions.
Our goal is to help business owners create the foundation they need to start making money online and learn how to market their business so they can achieve work-life balance.
Some business owners and entrepreneurs aren't willing to change their mindset, and as a result, they can end up never launching their new website. There will always be tweaks to make, sections to optimize, and steps to streamline, but your website can't make you money if it's not published.
What Actually Goes Into Building a Website?
When you break it down into small, manageable steps, building a website is actually pretty straightforward.
It's indecisiveness, inability to let go of the idea of "perfection," and fear that holds many people back.
You can always change things in the future, so don't let yourself get lost "in the weeds!"
Choose your web builder (as a Wix Legend Expert, we recommend Wix to most because it is affordable, easy to use & offers built-in security so you don't have to worry about updating plugins or hosting)
Decide if you're going to DIY or hire an expert (choose how much time you want to devote to learning the ins and outs of the new web builder, and decide if an expert might help you speed up the process)
Design a Logo yourself (using a tool like the Wix Logo Maker, Canva, or get help through a service like 99designs) you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a logo when you're just starting out - get something together that you like & focus on proving your concept before you invest lots of money into it
Research competitors & similar sites to identify what you like/don't like - you might feel that no one else is doing what you're doing, but it's still important to find examples of sites you like + know who your competitors are and what they're doing
Create a stylescape to establish the design direction of your website - stylescapes will save you time during the design portion of your site because you'll have taken the time to establish a set direction
Draw wireframes of key pages to plan out content & placement - this can be done on a piece of paper, or through an online whiteboard like Invision App, but planning out what content you'll need and where it will go BEFORE you start building is going to save you valuable time and energy
Start creating your website (update your color scheme, fonts & add sections + strips to your builder) - once you've established your design direction and what content you'll need + where it will go, you'll then get to work bringing the new website to life
Pro Tip: If you're not working with an expert, choose a free Wix Template that is the most similar to the layout you want to have to save you time.
Optimize your site for popular keywords (this is how your site will be found through search engines) - Wix makes this easy with their SEO Wizard, but make sure you also fill in your titles and meta descriptions on each page of your website
Configure your settings, upgrade your plan & connect your domain - Don't forget to go through the settings in the dashboard to set your business name, logo, description, location settings, etc., and upgrade your plan so you can connect your domain (free Wix websites do not come with domain connection)
Submit your site to Google - Wix makes this step easy through the Wix dashboard, but make sure you don't miss it, as it's a key step in order to make your website show in search results
Once your site is online you can start gathering valuable data through the analytics in your dashboard. This can then help you make data-driven decisions (rather than making changes based on a "gut feeling).
If you can accept that there will be bumps along the way that once worked out will result in a streamlined experience for you and your clients, you'll be well on your way to achieving work-life balance!
