What is The Core Web Vitals Technology Report?

It is a self-serve Google Data Studio dashboard that analyzes technologies used for website user experience. It then compares how the different systems perform when measured against the Core Web Vitals metrics.

Only indexed URLs can appear in this report, and the URLs shown are the URLs that have recorded data.

It is a great tool to help you track and validate fixes on your website so you can improve your site's performance.

Why Does Page Performance Matter?

One of the big factors in search engine optimization (SEO) is the user experience. If your site does not provide a quality experience to a user, it will not be shown as high in search results.

This is because Google and other search engines want to provide the most relevant and helpful results to a user.

If they direct a user to your website, but it's not what they're looking for, or they are confused on how to use your site, then the search engine will want to send the user somewhere else instead.

What is Page Speed?

Page speed measures how quickly the content on your page loads. This is one of the best practices to follow when improving the performance of your website.

SEO Best Practices to Keep in Mind:

  1. Enable Compression - Use Gzip for file compression to reduce the size of your code - not images (do this for code larger than 150 bytes).

  2. Minify Your Code (CSS, JavaScript + HTML) - optimizing your code helps to increase page speed. You'll also want to remove any unused code, formatting and code comments.

  3. Reduce redirects - URL redirects add time for the HTTP request-response cycle to complete. Basically, each redirect will slow down your page load speed.

  4. Leverage Browser Caching - This is great for return visitors, so when they come back to your website, their browser doesn't have to reload the entire page.

  5. Improve Server Response Time - Look for performance bottlenecks such as slow database queries, lack of memory, or slow routing and address them. The optimal server response is under 200ms.

  6. Use a Content Distribution Network - Also called CDNs are networks of servers that are used to distribute the load of delivering content. This means that copies of your site are stored at multiple, geographically diverse data centers so a visitor can have a faster and more reliable experience of your site.

  7. Optimize Images - Image size and file format matters! Try to use PNGs for graphics with fewer than 16 colors and JPEGs for photographs.

Wix and SEO Best Practices

The great news is if you have a Wix site, most of these best practices are already being handled for you (this is why Wix has such great core web vitals!).

Redirects, browser caching, and optimizing images (more so for file format, as Wix does automatically optimize image size) are best practices you have control over and will want to keep in mind for your website.
