Breaking It Down: Meta Information

If you’ve spent any length of time managing an online business, odds are that you’ve probably heard of the importance of Search Engine Optimization at one point or another.   Whether it was an article you read online or a presentation sent to you from a “Google Partner” claiming they can get your site on the front page of Google, the web industry has been hard at work stressing the importance of SEO to its consumers.  The truth is, as companies around the globe continue to shift their focus online, the ability to position yourself strategically in the search rankings has never been more important to the success of your business. Enter: meta information.

So what exactly is Search Engine Optimization and how does it affect your online business?

In simplest terms, SEO is the process of increasing your site’s visibility on popular search engines such as Google or Bing.  By including specific pieces of hidden data called Meta Information into your site’s code, we can influence what search queries will direct customers to your site.  The easiest way to understand this Meta Information is to make a real world comparisons to a brick and mortar business.  Think of your store’s meta information as your digital storefront.

What happens to your meta tags: Here’s where your meta tags end up at the end on Google search results. I’m sure you have had the experience of clicking on a link just because the link seemed to say exactly what you were looking for. Strive to make your own meta information as attractive as possible, without being overbearing.

Meta Title:

Your page’s Meta Title, just like the sign above your store, gives customers an immediate sense of what your business is about.  In Google’s Search Network, Meta Titles appear as the blue headings found on every Google listing and serve as the links to the webpage themselves.

URL:

Your page URL is essentially the same as your store’s physical address, it lets customers know where to look if they want to visit your location.  URLs themselves provide little SEO benefit but by creating easy to read, user friendly URLs can dramatically improve your click-through rates.

Meta Description:

Just like your store window, your Meta Description gives your customers a glimpse into what you have to offer inside.  Similar to how restaurants fill their window seats first to attract customers, use this field to show your customers the most valuable information on your page quickly to pique their interests.
