Beyond the Rodeo: Keeping Emotions in Check and Executing Fundamentals

"Keep Your Emotions in Check and Execute the fundamentals"

cowboy at a rodeo

Brendan and I recently found ourselves on a road trip back from a wedding in Arizona. To pass the time during our journey, we tuned in to the Joe Rogan Podcast featuring Dale Brisby, a rodeo cowboy known for his fearless approach to bull riding.

As we listened to Dale share his experiences and wisdom about the dangers of bull riding, one particular piece of advice caught our attention. He spoke of a moment right before the chute door opens when you're on the back of a massive bull or bronc, and it's a pure moment in time. In that intense situation, he emphasized that the only thing to do is to "keep your emotions in check and execute the fundamentals."

While this advice was originally intended for the rodeo, it got us thinking about how this mindset goes beyond the arena. In our everyday lives, we are emotional creatures by nature. Depending on your personality, you may lean more towards being analytical or emotional, but emotions undoubtedly play a significant role in the decisions you make.

Embracing Our Emotional Nature

Recognizing that we are emotional beings is the first step towards personal growth and success. Emotions can be both our greatest strengths and our biggest stumbling blocks. They can fuel our creativity, empathy, and motivation, but they can also cloud our judgment, hinder rational decision-making, and lead us astray.

The Chute Door Moments in Life

Much like the seconds before the chute door opens in the rodeo, life presents us with similar pivotal moments. These moments can come in the form of a career-changing decision, a relationship crossroads, or even the opportunity to start a small business and launch a website. In these critical moments, it's essential to keep our emotions in check and focus on executing the fundamentals.

Progress over Perfection

One common pitfall, especially for small business owners, is getting caught up in the pursuit of perfection. We often get distracted by the allure of new and shiny ideas, or are paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes. However, Dale's advice reminds us that in such moments, our best course of action is to concentrate on the basics and keep our emotions in check.

Progress is how you will see meaningful change in your life. Many people like to talk about what they're going to do, but the ones who put their heads down, and take small steps towards their goal each day will be the ones who see real progress.

Perfection isn't attainable. There will always be something else you could do to improve it, or someone gives input that reframes your goal. When it comes to your website, the neverending journey to perfection is what will prevent you from ever launching your website, or making a meaningful impact for your business.

The Power of Emotional Resilience

Emotional resilience is a skill that can be developed and honed over time. It doesn't mean suppressing emotions, but instead, learning how to channel them effectively. By acknowledging our emotions and understanding their impact, we can make informed decisions while embracing the passion and creativity they bring.

Practical Tips for Keeping Emotions in Check

  • Self-awareness: Recognize your emotional triggers and patterns.

  • Mindfulness: Practice being present and non-reactive to immediate emotions.

  • Pause and breathe: When faced with a critical decision, take a moment to center yourself.

  • Seek advice: Talk to mentors or trusted friends for guidance.

  • Set clear goals: Define the fundamentals that need execution and stay focused on them.

Dale Brisby's wisdom applies far beyond the rodeo. It's a mantra for success in life, reminding us to harness our emotional nature and make the most of pivotal moments.

By embracing this mindset, we can navigate the journey of small business ownership, website development, and other challenges with clarity, resilience, and a focus on progress over perfection.

Getting Online with a Plan for Consistent Business

In the world of online business and entrepreneurship, the pursuit of perfection can often be the biggest roadblock on the path to success. It's far more important to make consistent progress towards getting your website online and implementing a well-crafted plan for generating traffic.

While striving for excellence is admirable, it can become paralyzing if it hinders forward momentum. Perfection can lead to overthinking, excessive revisions, and unnecessary delays, all of which can be detrimental to your business.

By prioritizing progress over perfection, you acknowledge that perfection is an ever-elusive goal, and what truly matters is taking tangible steps toward your objectives.

In today's fast-paced digital landscape, launching your website and executing a marketing plan will allow you to establish a presence, gather valuable data, and refine your strategies as you go. It's through action and iteration that you'll ultimately reach a state of excellence, making progress the driving force behind your online success.
