Parts of a Website
This is a little diagram to help identify the terminology commonly referred to on a website.
|
Header
The header is the area at the top of the site that contains the logo, header navigation, search bar, and main navigation among other things. Header is always part of the template so it will be the same on all pages. |
Site Search
This is the main search bar built into the shopping cart. It allows customers to find your products or information very easily. Should always be in a place that is easy to find and use. Part of the header, thus part of the template. |
|
Header Navigation
Smaller navigation used to link important cart functions such as: View Cart, My Account, Checkout, etc. Commonplace to be located in the top right. Part of the header, thus part of the template. |
Main / Horizontal Navigation
This is the main navigation bar of the websites, it holds all the primary links to products and content for your website. Usually contains links such as: Products, About Us, Contact Us, etc. Part of the header, thus part of the template. |
|
Left Navigation
An expanded menu that contains additional links to pages or products. Usually used to further breakdown the product listing on a store into sub categories for easy browsing. Optional to be part of the template, sometimes the left navigation is omitted on the home page or other special pages to create more room for the content area. |
Content Area / Home page
This is the main body of the website, the content of this area will change depending on what page you are on. Certain parts of this will be provided by the shopping cart. Depending on the shopping cart, some elements in this area can or cannot be edited. This area also will be the location of the home page and main banners. Home page is also known as the landing page. This area is NOT part of the template because it is different on each page. |
|
Footer
This area is the end of the website. It contains any additional information about the company. Good place for authenticity or security seals, social media, and marketing elements. Also usually contains copyright and by lines. This is the same on all pages so it is part of the template. |
Background
This area fill the remainder of the website. Current web standards sets the width of websites to 960px wide, which will cover the vast majority of screen resolutions. Any larger screen size will allow for extra room which will be covered by the background. The background extends to the edge of the browser regardless of window size. The background is part of the template. |
